Fatty Coffee Based Drinks
1.2.04
Closer examination of the kilojoule content of some types of coffee reveals some worrying results for those of us trying to watch our waistlines. For example, a large caramel frappuccino with whipped topping and caramel sauce weighs in at about 430 calories. In contrast, three fried eggs with three slices of bacon is 417 calories.
In contrast, a plain old cup of coffee with one teaspoon of sugar and two tablespoons of milk is a comparatively feather-light 56 calories. Coffee in itself has almost no calories. But two tablespoons of flavoured syrup such as mocha or hazelnut adds 80 to 100 calories. One tablespoon of cream adds 50 calories and a puff of whipped cream adds about 100 calories. And the iced or frozen drinks are big fat traps, too. Many use ice cream at around 300 calories per cup.
But before you throw away that latte you’re sipping in disgust, there’s some easy ways to make your coffee consumption healthier. Ask for skim milk in drinks such as latte and cappuccino. Pass on the flavouring syrups and save about 50 calories. If you like flavours such as mocha, chocolate or hazelnut, buy flavoured coffee beans and brew your own drink. Avoid the whipped cream topping and save about 100 calories. That way your coffee addiction will only impact your hip pocket and not your waistline.
