Dangerous Coffee Therapy

8.12.04

Prince Charles has infuriated the medical profession by backing a controversial cancer treatment that involves taking daily coffee enemas and drinking litres of fruit juice instead of using drugs. Charles gave an enthusiastic endorsement to the Gerson Therapy, which rejects chemotherapy in favour of 13 fruit juices a day, coffee enemas and weekly injections of vitamins.

Cancer specialists say there is no scientific basis for the theory and that it can be dangerous because patients who are seriously ill often come off their normal treatment to try something unproven which may leave them badly dehydrated. Speaking to a room of 200 healthcare professionals at a conference, Charles said “I know of one patient who turned to Gerson Therapy having been told she was suffering from terminal cancer and would not survive another course of chemotherapy. Happily, seven years later, she is alive and well.

So it is vital that, rather than dismissing such experiences, we should further investigate the beneficial nature of these treatments.” The coffee enemas are used to strip the gut of harmful bacteria and pollutants, but specialists argue they often lead to other problems such as dehydration. The American Cancer Society warns that the therapy may be dangerous. On its website it states “Gerson Therapy can be very harmful to the body. Coffee enemas have been associated with serious infections, dehydration, constipation, colitis (inflammation of the colon), electrolyte (salt and mineral) imbalances, and even death.”

So the lesson to this story? For now just stick to putting coffee in your mouth.

The Medical Explanation of a Coffee Buzz

6.12.04

Coffee is probably the most commonly used stimulant in the world. Most people can relate to having a cuppa to help feel more alert but the science of the drowsy human brain has triggered increasing amounts of research. "Caffeine is not buying you a lot when you've taken it first thing in the morning after you've first awakened," said James Wyatt of the Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago. At that point, coffee is probably just treating symptoms of caffeine withdrawal, which include sleepiness, confusion and irritability, he said. Many people finds that have to awaken in the morning and enjoy their coffee from a Jura Impressa X7.

For fighting effects of sleep deprivation, caffeine helps a lot more when it's taken after at least eight hours of wakefulness, he said. So how does it work? One apparent part of the system is a substance called adenosine, which brain cells give off as a waste product. As brain cells function during wakefulness, they give off adenosine, which mounts up outside the brain cells.

There, the adenosine acts to inhibit brain cells that normally promote wakefulness and play key roles in brain function. So you feel sleepy and your mental functioning declines. Caffeine blocks drowsiness by interfering with adenosine's ability to affect brain cells. So next time you need a coffee break, just tell the boss you’re off to take an adenosine inhibitor and enjoy the confused silence!

Customer Sales Promotion

3.12.04

Customers can take quite a while to change their buying habits. One way that we can encourage and modify these habits is through our sales and marketing activities. One activity with a very fast pay-back is selling more products to our existing customers. If you have a customer who is buying one type of product from you, include as a gift or as an incentive or introduce additional items in your product range. For instance, if you have a customer who purchases coffee products from you, then they are an obvious site for also buying tea bags, disposable cups, ceramic cups etc.

Instead of giving them a cash discount off that purchase, include an additional item explaining what its value is, which is an item they normally wouldn’t buy from you, and it gives you an opportunity of increasing your sales to them. For instance if you have a customer who already buys coffee products from you, include a set of ceramic cups so that they can see the quality of the cups that we also provide without undermining your own revenue base of coffee supply.

Coffee May Help Reduce Anxiety

2.12.04

Despite the stereotype of the nervous coffee drinker, a report from London’s Goldsmith College found that a cup a day could make you less anxious. The study showed that people prone to anxiety attacks suffered significantly reduced stress after consuming a cup. Another benefit coffee has on your emotional wellbeing is reducing depression.

A study published in Archives of Internal Medicine showed a clear association between coffee drinking and a reduced risk of suicide and depression. So if the stress of the office is becoming too much for you, just make a good espresso, and relax.
